Strings · tension · comfort

What changes when string tension changes?

Lower tension lets the string bed deflect more. Higher tension feels more direct, but usually offers less free depth and a less forgiving response.

Four practical ranges

TensionTypical responseStarting point
18–20 kgsoft, high pocketing, easy depthcomfort-oriented or many polyester setups
21–23 kgbalanced power and controlmany recreational and club players
24–26 kgfirmer and more directfast, clean swings

Material changes the answer

Polyester is typically stiffer and is often installed at a lower tension. Multifilament and natural gut are more elastic and may be used slightly higher. A hybrid can use different tensions for mains and crosses.

Change one variable

Record string model, gauge, tension and playing hours. Adjust by only one or two kilograms at a time; otherwise it is difficult to identify what improved or harmed the setup.

Arm comfort: Very firm polyester is rarely a sensible default for a sore arm. Persistent pain needs professional assessment.

When to restring

Strings lose tension and elasticity even before breaking. Restring when response, comfort or spin drops noticeably, or when deep notches appear.
